Mets Sign Sheffield; Church Most Affected
By: Chris Caraballo @ 6:25 PM
It appears Gary Sheffield is headed to the Mets afterall. He and the Mets agreed today to a contract. Sheffield will take a physical and join the team tomorrow.

Omar Minaya stressed the point that Sheffield isnt guaranteed any spot, that he'd have to work for his playing time. He also mentioned that Jerry Manuel expressed the same line of thinking to Gary.

The Mets made this sound like a can't lose proposition, but truthfully why is Sheffield here? Because he wants to play and has made is clear he will only play for a team that gives him consistent regular time, the Mets had to have told him something to please his ears.

My opinion is the odd man out in this situation is Ryan Church. He better play well and not hit a slump of Sheffield will take his starting spot. The Mets love Daniel Murphy too much to reduce his role. Fernando Tatis' value has also diminished since he was the only right handed power option the Mets had, now he's the 2nd.

It will be interesting to see how Sheffield acts after #500 is out of the way and he can't seem to break Jerry Manuel's lineup. I know this for sure, he can't use the race card on this side of town like he did with the Yankees, his manager is the same ethnicity.

Let's hope he is a good citizen because he is working for a contract next year with some team. He definitely brings toughness to this team, no doubt about that. Do I want him, no, am I upset they got him, no, its one of those "ehh" things.

Also, so much for Nick Evans hard, well played spring training. He just lost his chance to be part of the opening day ceremony; which for him would have been special. I hope he doesn't get down, or lose motivation over this.

Its going to be an interesting debate in NY, I'd love to hear fellow Mets fans take.

What do you think of the Sheffield signing?
